Moving Home? 5 Steps to help you achieve your Dream Space on a budget.
We have all gone through the ordeal of moving home. It can be an incredibly stressful time, but it can also be an opportunity to bring a little bit of change and freshness into our lives. Being on a budget is a challenge, but it shouldn’t stop you from achieving the room you are dreaming of, as there are plenty of tricks to keep creativity levels high and spending low.
Here are 5 simple steps to help you achieve the space you are looking for without breaking the bank.
- Get inspired
Start by figuring out what you want to achieve with your design project - take note of what you already have and the style you aim to develop. There is a never ending wealth of resources you can get hold of. Social media platforms such as Instagram and Pinterest are great for gathering visual inspiration and helping you create a coherent theme. Blogs and home decor websites can help to keep you up to date with the latest trends in interior design. Narrow down your preferred colour palette, materials and style. At this stage moodboards can be great tools for organising and prioritising the information you’ve found, and also to help you visualise how you can incorporate different elements in your design.
- Plan
It might seem obvious, but we can all get a bit carried away when it comes to home decor inspiration, and soon forget that planning is the cornerstone of every design project. Avoid the temptation of going straight to the home decor shop and buying everything that you like, as you will probably end up having to fit your entire design around a bunch of different objects. Remember that in terms of design often less is more. Draw a considerate plan, including a proposed layout, bearing measurements in mind.
- Do your research
From actually going to the shops, to browsing the internet, we have amazing tools for finding the right products, deals and much more. You will soon discover that you can get that dining table you love for less if you search well enough. Doing your research will save you time and money, and will ensure that you keep all your findings in line with your original plan and budget. It is easy to get lost in a sea of options, but remember to keep the basics of colour palette, style, price, and dimensions constantly in mind.
- Develop
This is probably when the real fun starts, as everything comes together, you can start ordering the elements you have carefully chosen for the space. This is also a great time to look back and make the final alterations. Think about your personal items and how a merge between the old and the new, can create a really homely atmosphere. Using the elements you already have that can be improved, reupholstered or repurposed, is a great way to save money and add one of a kind pieces to your design.
- Don’t forget lighting
In the excitement of choosing the right paint hue, and picking exciting cushions and candles, we tend to forget that lighting is THE crucial element when it comes to creating ambience. Plain ceiling shades won’t do the trick on their own, and it’s recommended that you have at least three focal points of light in a room. As with everything else, there are plenty of options when it comes to home lighting, including making your own shades using up-cycled materials, getting a vintage piece from a charity shop or investing in one eye catching statement piece. Whatever you pick, lighting can be the cherry on the cake when it comes to home decoration.
